What are they?

Today's interactive services include applications for both inter-personal communications (such as email and chat) and on-demand content (such as Web browsing). Services targeted to consumers and small business are limited by the speed of telephone modems and by intermittent dial-up connectivity.

Broadband access (based on cable modems and similar technologies) provides much greater value to consumers and businesses. It enables operating speeds many times faster than with telephone modems and it enables a continuous on-line connection often termed "always on".

Broadband-enabled interactive services include both much faster versions of today's applications, and new applications that are only possible with broadband access.

Why is their importance growing?

Larger businesses have long used higher-speed Internet connections to facilitate their business processes.

New technologies and applications are starting to make similar capabilities available to smaller businesses and consumers. The desire for higher speed connectivity in the residential and small business user segments has been created by the growth and popularity of the Internet, telecommuting, the expanding presence of home offices and the need for even small businesses to be globally interconnected.

Opportunities to profit from new markets emerge when there is a convergence of customer needs, enabling technologies, compelling applications and companies with the skill set and resources to address them. System Dynamics believes that broadband-enabled applications are such an opportunity and is focused on assisting clients who are interested in participating in this marketplace.

The following diagram illustrates some of the important elements in the development of these emerging opportunities:
